DOVADO places VoIP call over 3G/UMTS TDD

In a milestone achievement for DOVADO, the company has conducted its first Voice-over-IP call between a DOVADO Residential Gateway and the traditional fixed and mobile network in Sweden. The calls were placed using 3G/UMTS TDD (Time-Division Duplex) as the wireless backhaul technology of preference, delivering a low delay time and high bandwidth across a large distance. Using such a gateway, the subscriber is able to place a telephone call using a regular household phone and connecting a computer for broadband internet access at megabit speeds.

The test site, hosted by a Swedish operator, was erected on Thursday, July 1st; configured to use the 3G/UMTS TDD air frequency of 3.4 GHz. The demonstration proved that operators with an existing subscriber base using TDD-Ethernet modems are able to expand their service offerings by deploying Voice as an additional form of revenue, delivering crisp quality and telecom-graded two port telephony, as well as the option to connect several computers without using any dialing software.

With a simple Plug-and-Play approach to the subscriber, the DOVADO Residential Gateway offers Ethernet and Analog Telephony interfaces, now a globally-deployed standard; to connect their devices and be part of a Wireless Broadband and Telephony network in mere seconds.

Operators willing to expand their ISP, Fixed or Mobile businesses into the wireless broadband realm are able to do so using Time-Division Duplex, belonging to the 3G/UMTS body of standards. Subscribers can have an always-on, ten times faster Internet access compared to mainstream FDD (Frequency-Division Duplex) variant of 3G/UMTS,at a fraction of the cost. Other associated attributes include the harnessing of time-sensitive applications such as voice, video and gaming. Distance of service delivery ranges from 1km in the urban environment and up to 29km in the rural.
